Although neurological and physiological studies indicate a right hemisphere superiority in global processing and a left hemisphere superiority in local processing of Navon-type hierarchical letters (D. Navon, 1977), most investigations of lateralized perception in healthy participants report neither asymmetry. In 6 experiments the authors examined the influence of attentional demands, stimulus properties, and mode of response on perceptual asymmetries for global and local perception. Consistent with their theoretical predictions, asymmetries were more robust on divided- than focused-attention tasks and in response to stimuli in which local and global levels were equally salient compared with those with greater global than local saliency. The EM algorithm is a popular method for parameter estimation in a variety of problems involving missing data. However, the EM algorithm often requires significant computational resources and has been dismissed as impractical for large databases. We present two approaches that significantly reduce the computational cost of applying the EM algorithm to databases with a large number of cases, including databases with large dimensionality. Both approaches are based on partial E-steps for which we can use the results of Neal and Hinton (In Jordan, M. (Ed.), Learning in Graphical Models, pp. 355–371. The Netherlands: Kluwer Academic Publishers) to obtain the standard convergence guarantees of EM. The first approach is a version of the incremental EM algorithm, described in Neal and Hinton (1998), which cycles through data cases in blocks. The number of cases in each block dramatically effects the efficiency of the algorithm. We provide amethod for selecting a near optimal block size. The second approach, which we call lazy EM, will, at scheduled iterations, evaluate the significance of each data case and then proceed for several iterations actively using only the significant cases. We demonstrate that both methods can significantly reduce computational costs through their application to high-dimensional real-world and synthetic mixture modeling problems for large databases. 相似文献

Task analysis methods provide an insight for quantitative and qualitative predictions of how people will use a proposed system, though the different versions have different emphases. Most of the methods can attest to the coverage of the functionality of a system and all provide estimates of task performance time. However, most of the tasks that operators deal with in a digital work environment in the main control room of an advanced nuclear power plant require high mental activity. Such mental tasks overlap and must be dealt with at the same time; most of them can be assumed to be highly parallel in nature. Therefore, the primary aim to be addressed in this paper was to develop a method that adopts CPM-GOMS (cognitive perceptual motor-goals operators methods selection rules) as the basic pattern of mental task analysis for the advanced main control room. A within-subjects experiment design was used to examine the validity of the modified CPM-GOMS. Thirty participants participated in two task types, which included high- and low-compatibility types. The results indicated that the performance was significantly higher on the high-compatibility task type than on the low-compatibility task type; that is, the modified CPM-GOMS could distinguish the difference between high- and low-compatibility mental tasks. 相似文献

In this study, the authors addressed the longitudinal nature of intraindividual variability over 3 years. A sample of 304 community-dwelling older adults, initially between the ages of 64 and 92 years, completed 4 waves of annual testing on a battery of accuracy- and latency-based tests covering a wide range of cognitive complexity. Increases in response-time inconsistency on moderately and highly complex tasks were associated with increasing age, but there were significant individual differences in change across the entire sample. The time-varying covariation between cognition and inconsistency was significant across the 1-year intervals and remained stable across both time and age. On occasions when intraindividual variability was high, participants' cognitive performance was correspondingly low. The strength of the coupling relationship was greater for more fluid cognitive domains such as memory, reasoning, and processing speed than for more crystallized domains such as verbal ability. Variability based on moderately and highly complex tasks provided the strongest prediction.
